Roger DeYoung Killed In Cave-in

Roger DeYoung, 45, Le Mars, excavating contractor, was dead on hospital arrival about noon Monday, (October 18, 1976)after he was trapped in the collapse of a sewer trench he was digging at his west Floyd park housing development.

Plymouth county medical examiner Dr. Daryl Doorenbos said Mr. DeYoung died of chest injuries from the weight of dirt which covered him up to his neck when the muddy clay sand walls in the 5 1/2 to 6 foot trench gave way. The first snow of the season had been falling all morning.

Working with Mr. DeYoung were his son Randy, a business business partner, who dug his father out of the trench immediately with a backhoe assisted by Jim Bartel and the trenches co-workers.

Another witness surmised there was ?????? digging nearby why may have triggered the cave-in.

The Le Mars fire siren sounded at 12:03 p.m. and the emergency rescue unit's efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He was rushed to the hospital by the Le Mars ambulance service.

The DeYoung addition where he was working is located east of West Floyd Park on the southwest side of Le Mars.

Mr. DeYoung was the senior partner in DeYoung Excavating service.

He was born Nov. 4, 1930 in Le Mars to Henry and Pearl Kewely DeYoung and was a lifelong resident. He was a member of Grace Lutheran church and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

His marriage to Dorothy Reich took place May 19, 1951 in Le Mars. The couple celebrated their silver wedding anniversary this year with a family trip to Las Vegas and the couple spent some time in Hawaii.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Grace Lutheran church with Rev. James Rassback officiating. Burial will be in the Le Mars Memorial cemetery under direction of the Luken-Johnson funeral home.

A prayer service will be held at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Survivors are his wife, Dorothy; his mother, Mrs. Pearl DeYoung, Le Mars; two sons, Randall and Roger, Jr., both of Le Mars; three daughters, Mrs. Dave (Vicki) Jepsen, South Sioux City; Mrs. Candice Christensen, Le Mars, and Debbie at home; three brothers, Joseph, Le Mars; Le Roy, Craig and Donald, Los Angeles.
