Kay Schramm, 72, of Le Mars, died Tuesday, March 17, 2009, following a lengthy illness.

Kay H. Rasmus was born Nov. 23, 1936, in Cherokee, the daughter of Edward "Dale" and Vera Mae (Barnes) Rasmus. She graduated from Cherokee High School in 1955. She later attended college at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion.

On Aug. 30, 1958, Kay and Virgil Dean Schramm were united in marriage in Benson, Neb. They made their home in Sioux City for a brief time. The couple lived in Des Moines, East St. Louis, Ill., and Storm Lake, where they managed bowling lanes. In 1969, Kay's mother, Vera Roberson, purchased part of Sweet Sixteen Lanes in Le Mars. Kay and her family moved to Le Mars to manage the business and would later become business partners with Kay's mother. Kay would teach the youth bowling program for more than 30 years.

Kay adored spending time with her grandchildren. She loved bird watching and all types of nature. She spent her spare time quilting, photography, shopping and traveling. In her early years she enjoyed horseback riding. Kay was always concerned about others and her friends would describe her as a "neat and caring lady."

She will be lovingly remembered by a daughter, Nadine Schramm of Ponder, Texas; a son and his wife, Gregory and Diana Schramm of Ada, Mich.; a daughter and her husband, Leisha and Alan Phillips of Le Mars; three grandchildren, Katelin, Kristen and Braydon Schramm; a sister and her husband Harriet and Bill Buckalew of Denver, Colo.; a brother Boyd and Maxine Rasmus of Kansas City, Mo.; a nephew and his wife David and Kathy Rasmus of Minneapolis, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Virgil Aug. 12, 2005.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 4, at the United Methodist Church of Le Mars. The Rev. Jason Larson will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. Friday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday at the church.
