Belva Watters

Belva Watters, 71, of Ocheyedan, Iowa, passed away Saturday, July 29, 2000, at Worthington, Minnesota Regional Hospital, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were Wednesday, August 2, 2000 at United Methodist Church with the Rev. Paul Frederikesen officiating. Burial was in the Ocheyedan Township Cemetery. Walton, Roste & Vogel Funeral Home of Sibley was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Watters was born February 20, 1929, in Akron, Iowa, the daughter of John and Bessie (Raish) Willer. She grew up in Akron and attended rural school in Westfield Township and graduated from Westfield Consolidated School in 1946. Belva attended Westmar College in Le Mars, Iowa, received her bachelor's degree with a major in Home economics in 1950. She earned her master's degree at the University of Northern Colorado in 1954. She taught home economics, history and physical education at Arnolds Park, Ocheyedan and Harris Lake Park school.

Belva married Marvin Watters January 2, 1955, in Ocheyedan. They farmed southeast of Ocheyedan until retiring in 1986. Belva enjoyed and was an active member of the United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. she was active in the Iowa State Education Association, Iowa Federation of Women's Clubs and the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

Survivors include her husband; a son, David Watters of Ocheyedan; a daughter, Janet Stone of Greeley, Colo.; five grandchidren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters Betty Hamman of Novato, Califoornia and Donna and her husband, Glen Martin of Akron, Iowa; a brother-in-law, John Dirks of Hawarden, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

Belva was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters and four brothers-in-law, Helen Dirks, Stella Claussen and her husband, Gerhard, Vera McMahan and her husband, Bernard, John Hamman and Darrel Caskey.
