JOE OVERMAN
Joseph Overman, who lived at 435 1st Ave. S.W., LeMars, passed away January 2, at his home following a sickness lasting three months.
Mr. Overman, a prominent LeMars business man, had been employed as a salesman at Bowers clothing store for thirty-five years. He had lived in LeMars since his marriage to Edna Ivey on June 12, 1912. The celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary in 1952.
Deceased was born June 29th, 1889, in Holland and came to the United States when he was 17 years of age. He was 63 years, 6 months, and 3 days of age.
Very active in civic affairs, Mr. Overman was Past Worthy President of F.O.E. 1381 of LeMars; President of the Concert Association. He helped organize the first city band 40 years ago and was also a member of the band for forty years. He also helped start and direct the Boys Legion Drum and Bugle Corp, which was started in 1927.
For the past forty years, Mr. Overman was employed in the clothing business. He was with Kehrberg-Schneider Co. before his employment with the present Bowers Clothing Store.
Funeral services were held today, January 5, 1953, at 2:00 p.m. at Luken’s Funeral Home with Rev. H.V. Bartz and Rev. F.E. Burgess of Storm Lake officiating at last rites. Burial was in the city cemetery under the direction of Luken funeral home.
Pallbearers were Gordon Stokes, James Miller, Art Hansen, Robert Totman, Ed Nelle, Earl Earnest.
Survivors include his wife, Edna; three sons, Richard of Sacramento, California; Clyde and Harold of LeMars; 2 daughters, Mrs. Ross Mallette (Helen), of Sioux City; Mrs. Gary Vandenberg of Sioux Center; 23 grandchildren; one brother, Tunis Overman of Rock Rapids, Iowa; 2 sisters, Mrs. Al Dykema of Worthington, Minnesota and Mrs. William McAlpine of Sheldon.
Mr. Overman was a member of the Methodist church in LeMars.
