Helen Klemme, 92, of Akron, Iowa passed away Friday, February 06, 2009 at St. Luke’s Regional Medical Center in Sioux City, Iowa.

Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, February 9, 2009 at First Baptist Church in Akron, Iowa. Pastor Mike Avery will officiate. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be after 4:00 p.m. Sunday, February 8, 2009, with the family present after 6:00 p.m., and a Prayer service at 7:00 p.m., all at Carlsen Funeral Home – Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Helen Evelyn Klemme was born July 15, 1916 on the family farm in Union County, South Dakota, the daughter of Louis and Florence (Waterbury) Sprenger. She attended Hoyt country school in Union County. She attended high school in Akron and graduated from Akron High School.

She was united in marriage to Embert August Klemme on December 10, 1941 in Dakota City, Nebraska. The couple farmed east of Akron, near Ruble, and later near Craig, Iowa. In 1968, they settled on her parent’s farm in Union County, South Dakota. Embert passed away February 26, 1996. Helen continued to live on the farm until the summer of 2008, when she moved to the Village South Apartments in Akron.

Helen was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church in Akron, having taught Sunday school for many years. She was also a member of the American Baptist Women organization and the Union County Extension. Helen loved to cook and bake for her family and friends. She enjoyed reading cookbooks as well as collecting them. She also enjoyed tending to her vegetable garden and canning. But most of all, she loved her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. Helen was always there for anyone, giving and sharing whenever needed. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her 5 children: Dallas Klemme and his wife Kathleen of rural Akron, Garry Klemme and his wife Carol of rural Akron, Larry Klemme and his wife Mary of Allen, NE, Ronnie Klemme and his wife Kathy of rural Hawarden, IA, and Debra Lewison and her husband Kevin rural Akron; 19 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; a sister: Ida Stone of Sioux City; a sister-in-law: Martha Sprenger of Sioux City; a “special” relative: Joe Albers of Sioux City, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother: Louis “Bud”, Jr.; a sister and her husband: Florence and Marvin Moss; a grandson: Brian Klemme; and a great grandchild in infancy.
