Mr. Carey, who was born Dec. 26, 1897, at Salem, S.D., compiled an impressive record during his 36 years in the LeMars public school system. He was head coach for all sports for 27 years and athletic director at the school for eight years.

His marriage to Josephine Fransco took place Aug. 23, 1933, in Sioux Falls. She died Dec. 7, 1972, in LeMars. He also was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.

Mr. Carey was a 27-year member of the LeMars Rotary Club, joining in 1948. He was a longtime member of the American Legion.

In 1958 the school dedicated its new gymnasium, Carey Gym, in his honor. Ten years later, 1968, he was inducted into the Iowa football coaches hall of fame.

School records show his career in terms of length and success is unequaled in the 90-year history of the school.

Only last Friday (April 25) Mr. Carey was pictured on the Daily Sentinel sports page with his black poodle, Henry the VIII, which he brought back to LeMars from his winter home at Truth or Consequences, N.M.

Mr. Carey was seen daily walking his dog. For 27 years he had owned bulldogs. The original bulldog was mascot for the LeMars Bulldogs.
