Elroy W. Heimgartner, 89, of Le Mars, died Friday, Jan. 23, 2009, at his home following a lengthy illness.

Elroy Walter Heimgartner was born on the family farm in Lincoln Township, Plymouth County (rural Hinton) on April 10, 1919, the son of Henry and Kathryn (Voegeli) Heimgartner. He was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. Elroy attended country school near his home in Lincoln Township. When he completed his education, Elroy began farming with his family.

On April 20, 1944, Elroy and Maycele Lang were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on the farm east of Hinton. They were blessed with three children. The family farmed near Hinton until Elroy and Maycele moved to Le Mars in 1979. Even though they moved to Le Mars, Elroy continued to farm with his son Dennis.

Elroy was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. Throughout the years he held various offices and positions at church. He was also a member of Farm Bureau and the Hinton Elevator Board.

In earlier years Elroy was a baseball coach and enjoyed bowling. He was an avid St. Louis Cardinals fan.

He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Maycele of Le Mars; two daughters Diane Hartman and her husband Calvin of South Sioux City, Neb., and Glenda Heimgartner of Le Mars; a son Dennis Heimgartner and his wife Jan of Hinton; five grandchildren Scott and Ann Hartman, Tami and Barry Walker, Kristine and Tom Richard, Jeffrey and Jasmine Heimgartner, Melissa and Geoffrey Boedeker; six great-grandchildren, Brendan and Hayley Hartman, Ryan and Kyle Richard, Jayden and Jonah Heimgarter; two sisters-in-law, Florence Heimgartner of Le Mars and Lillian Heimgartner of Illinois; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Albrick, Ruben, Robert, and Duane; and sisters-in-law Elsie and Lorna Heimgartner.

Funeral services will take place at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Hinton. The Rev. Steven Stoll will officiate. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation began at noon Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family was present from 4 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church on Monday prior to the funeral.

Honorary pallbearers will be Tami Walker, Kristine Richard, Melissa Boedeker, Ann Hartman and Jasmine Heimgartner.

Pallbearers will be Scott Hartman, Jeffrey Heimgartner, Tom Richard, Barry Walker, Geoffrey Boedeker, Donald Heimgartner, and Steve Lang.
