Helen I. Burgers, 83, of Le Mars, died Monday, Dec. 29, 2008, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City.
Helen Irene Kopecky was born July 20, 1925, on the family farm east of Lynch, Neb., the daughter of John and Marie (Cejka) Kopecky. Helen was baptized into the Catholic faith. She attended school near her home. In 1951, Helen and her mother moved to Sioux City. She worked for various business in Sioux City.
Helen was united in marriage to Tony Burgers Aug. 10, 1965, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua. Helen worked for Wincharger/Zeneith for several years. Tony and Helen moved to Le Mars in 1965. She cared for her mother until her death in the early 1980s. While living in Le Mars, Helen worked cleaning homes for several years.
Helen enjoyed baking and watching nature. She was a very compassionate women who loved and respected people and animals. For the last couple of years, Helen had lived at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars and as her health declined she became a resident of the Indian Hills Care Center in Sioux City to be closer to the needed dialysis center.
Survivors include her husband of 43 years, Tony Burgers of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Mary Burgers of Hawarden, and Winnie Kamminga of Crescent; and several nieces and nephews.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Marie (Cejka) Kopecky; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Agnes Kopecky, Jerry and Bev Kopecky, and Louis and Mildred Kopecky.
Graveside services will be at noon Saturday at the National Cemetery at Spencer, Neb., with Father Tim Podraza of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating. Visitation will be Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home with the family present after 5 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service with Pastor Jan Christensen of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ officiating.
