Caroline Scheitler, 81, of Le Mars, died Saturday, Nov. 15, 2008, lovingly surrounded by her family at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

The former Caroline Marie Zenk was born Jan. 16, 1927, at Remsen, the daughter of Theodore and Mathilda (Jochum) Zenk. She grew up in the Remsen area and attended country school southeast of Remsen for a few years, then went to school at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen and graduated from St. Mary's Academy in Alton.

At the young age of 13, Caroline helped with the care for mothers with new babies and did housework, laundry and cooked. As time went on, she became interested in the health field and worked at Sacred Heart Hospital in Le Mars as a nurse's aide. She also cleaned the new elementary school in Oyens for years, had numerous house cleaning jobs and helped with elderly and disabled individuals.

On May 21, 1946, Caroline was married to Alvin L. Scheitler at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Oyens. They farmed in the Oyens area for 40 years and then moved to Le Mars in 1981.

To this union eight children, three sons and five daughters, were born. In 1981 she began working at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars until 1991 and had also done home health care for two years. Her husband Alvin died on April 5, 2008.

Caroline was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars and the Catholic Daughters of America.

Caroline loved to play games with all of the grandchildren. She also did craft work and enjoyed making jean quilts for each one of the grandchildren. She loved her flowers, making jams and jellies and going fishing.

Survivors include her eight children: Stanley and Janice Scheitler of Remsen, Jeanette and Norm Schwartz of Hinton, Lyle and Betty Scheitler of Le Mars, Roger and Laurie Scheitler of Merrill, Judy and Bob Campbell of Wichita, Kan., Joann and Donald M. Hoffmann of Akron, Rose and David Logan of Des Moines, and Kris and Kelly Mroczkowski of Johnston; 25 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and many close loving friends and families.

She was preceded in death by her husband Alvin; parents, Theodore and Mathilda Zenk; a grandson Joseph Lyle Scheitler; a great-grandson Mitchel David Scheitler; a brother Victor Zenk; and many aunts and uncles.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery in Oyens. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars, where there will be a rosary at 4 p.m. by the Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil prayer service at 7 p.m. The family will be present after 5:30 p.m.

Caroline's eight children will be her pallbearers.
