Jack V. Harker, 73, of Naples, Fla., formerly of Le Mars died Tuesday, June 22, 1999, at the Naples Community Hospital in Naples, Fla., from complications of Alzheimer’s disease.

John Vincent Harker was born Sept. 23, 1925, in Le Mars, son of J. Vincent and Eleanor (Carlton) Harker. He had attended public school in Le Mars, leaving before his senior year to join the Navy in 1943. He had served in the Pacific Theater during the final years of World War II. After returning to Le Mars in 1945, Jack attended Bradley University in Peoria, Ill., graduating with a bachelor of science degree in business administration.

Jack returned to Le Mars to successfully carry on the family food service business; Harker’s Inc., until his retirement in 1986.

On Jan. 9, 1982, he married Joan Davidson in Le Mars.

Jack will be remembered as a loving father and husband, who taught us all humility, dignity, and the importance of family and friends. Knowing him was a gift, and we will miss him and love him forever.

Survivors include his wife Joan of Naples, Fla.; three children, Susan Harker-Brunn and her husband, Jim, of Edina, Minn., Vicki Harker-Robinson and her husband, Ross, of Edina, Minn., and Jim Harker and his wife, Cheri, of Edina, Minn.; five stepchildren, Tom Wissing and his wife, Barbara, of Sioux City, David Wissing of Denver, Colo., Andrew Wissing and his wife, Alice, of Santa Barbara, Calif., and Shawn Wissing of Phoenix, Ariz.; a brother Carlton Harker and his wife Rita, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; 15 grandchildren; and his former wife, Dorothy Harker, of Edina, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Eleanor Harker.

Funeral services will be 11:30 a.m. Friday at the First United Methodist Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Lynn Potter officiating. Inurnment will be in Memorial Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the Wasmer American Legion Post 241 of Le Mars. Funeral arrangements are with the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars.
