2 BOYS DROWN IN A POND

LaVern Eichorn, 15, son of Mr. and Mrs. Earl Eichhorn of near Kingsley and Roland Kaiser, 10-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Kaiser of near Merrill were drowned Sunday afternoon about 3:50.

Corner Sylvester H. Luken said the two boys were playing in a group which included Gerald and Dennis Kaiser, brothers of Roland; Darrell, Loren and Darlene Eichhorn, brothers and sister of LaVern; and Jerry Fish, a neighbor boy. The pond is situated on the Voss farm.

The Voss farm is located four miles south of the Sitzmann gas station, one East and ¼ south. (The Sitzman station is ten miles south of LeMars on the blacktop road.)

The coroner said the drowned boy LaVern, Jerry Fish, Loren Eichhorn, Gerald Kaiser were not swimming. The rest of the group had gone in swimming.

Roland evidently stepped into a hole in the pond bed and yelled for help. LaVern went to his aid and both drowned. The other children went to the Eichhorn farm a half-mile away for help. Mrs. Eichhorn recovered the body of Roland, but the Kingsley fire department had to be summoned to find LaVern’s body. Firemen administered artificial respiration, but could not revive the boy. The fire department used a garden rake to recover the body.

Mr. Luken said the bottom of the pond was a V-shape, causing the water to get deeper toward the middle. Roland evidently got too far from the edge and then stepped into a depression.
