Clara W. Nussbaum, 93, of Le Mars, a lifelong Plymouth County resident, died Monday, May 2, 2005, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.

Clara Wilhelmina Westhoff was born March 4, 1912 on a farm in Grant Township, Plymouth County, the daughter of Gerd and Wilhelmina (Acker) Westhoff. She was baptized on March 17, 1912. Clara began her education at a country school near her home and completed her schooling at the Christ Lutheran Parochial School in Grant Township.

Clara cared for her invalid mother for 34 years following her education. She married John Von Hagel on April 18, 1945. John died on Aug. 17, 1949. On Feb. 14, 1951, she married George E. Nussbaum at St. John's American Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The couple made their home in Elgin Township, Plymouth County, where they farmed. During these years, Clara's sister-in-law Emma died suddenly. Clara and George helped to raise their niece and nephew, Glenda and Wilbur Westhoff.

In 1974, Clara and George retired and moved to Le Mars. George died on Nov. 30, 1983. Clara remained in her home until moving to Plymouth Manor Care Center on Jan. 7, 2002.

She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars and the Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (WELCA).

Clara will be lovingly remembered by her son, Gene and his wife, Lorie of Le Mars; a daughter, Joan Schuette and her husband, Dennis of Brandon, S.D.; a granddaughter, Crystal Steuerwald and her husband, Rick and a great-grandson Chase Steuerwald, all of Sioux Falls, S.D., a granddaughter, Jennifer Nussbaum of Le Mars and a grandson Scott Nussbaum serving overseas in Iraq with the United States Army.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husbands John and George; and a brother, George Westhoff.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Memorial Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. and there will be a prayer service at 7:30 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.

Pallbearers will be Bruce Frerichs, Wayne Beitelspacher, Delbert Berkenpas, Darwin Berkenpas, Roger Nussbaum, Neil Oetken and Tim Kruse.
