Eugene "Gene" Schiltz, 49, of Remen, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2008, at Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.

Eugene Schiltz was born Sept. 12, 1959, at Le Mars, the son of Richard and June (Boever) Schiltz. Gene was raised on a farm near Remsen and moved with his family into Remsen in November 1973. He received his education at St. Mary Catholic School in Remsen from which he graduated in 1978. He then worked in Orange City at Advance Brands, in sanitation, up until his recent illness.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen. He liked spending time with family and friends, driving his pickup around and enjoyed watching sports.

The ones who gratefully shared Gene's life and are left to honor his memory are his mother, June Schiltz of Remsen; five brothers and two sisters, Gary and his wife Mona of Craig, Karen and her husband Bob Fiedler of Remsen, Steve and his special friend Miriam Carlson of Remsen, Jim and his wife Diana "Sam" of Casa Grande, Ariz., Mary and her husband Randy Stoos of Remsen, Bill and his wife Karna of Hinton, and Doug of West Des Moines; 25 nieces and nephews and 35 great-nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard; and a sister-in-law, Pam Schiltz.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. William McCarthy officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery in Remsen. Friends may call after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday), at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen where there will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m.

Casketbearers will be Gary, Steve, Jim, Bill and Doug Schiltz and Jodi Weiler. Honorary bearers will be Robert, Matt, Shawn, Drew and Owen Schiltz, Chad Fiedler, Jessica Tentinger.
