Merrill, Iowa - Lily Tammen, 91, of Luverne, Minnesota, formerly of Merrill, Iowa, passed away on Saturday, June 18, 2005 at the Luverne Community Hospital.
Lily Helen Tammen was born on November 29, 1913 in Washington Township, Plymouth County, Iowa, the daughter of John H. and Johanna (Johnson) Pageler. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul Lutheran Church, rural Merrill, Iowa. She attended country school near her home and helped her family with farming.
On July 3, 1935 Lily and George Tony Tammen were united in marriage at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. Throughout the years Lily and George farmed in Washington, Preston and Grant Townships. They retired from farming in 1974 and moved to Merrill. George passed away on January 10, 1992. Lily moved to Luverne, Minnesota in 1999 and lived with her daughter Delores. After suffering a stroke in 2001, Lily moved to the Mary Jane Brown Home in Luverne where she was currently residing.
As well as a homemaker, Lily served as a caregiver for her mother for six years while living near Craig. She also cared for her husband George after he suffered from a stroke while living in Merrill. She enjoyed fishing with her grandchildren. Lily also had a large garden and did a great deal of canning during her lifetime. She read her Bible daily which was obvious by its worn condition.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Delores Mulligan and her husband John of Luverne, MN; four grandchildren Theresa Hogan of Buda, Texas, Mary Bullerman and her husband Monty of Adrian, MN, Timothy Mulligan and his wife Nancy of Shellsburg, IA, and Charles Mulligan and his wife Judy of Omaha, NE; 11 great-grandchildren Christa, Carrie and Casie Hogan, Jennifer, Jacquline and Jordan Vogt, Jessica, Steve, Stephanie, Danielle and Matthew Mulligan.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George; a great-grandson John Charles Mulligan; three sisters Mary Eilers, Theda Eilers and Emma Tammen; six brothers Fred, Gerd, Henry, Carl, Emil and Herman Pageler.
Funeral services will begin at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church in Craig, Iowa. Rev. Pete Petersen will officiate. Burial will follow at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery in Craig. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. The family will be present from 6-8 p.m. with a prayer service scheduled for 7:00 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral. Honorary Pallbearers will be her grandchildren. Honorary Pallbearers will be her great-grandchildren.
