EMMA K. POPKEN
LE MARS, Iowa—Emma K. Popken, 82, of LeMars died Sunday, Nov. 17, 1996, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at St. John's Lutheran Church, E.L.C.A. in LeMars, with the Rev. Gary Landsness officiating. Burial will be in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, in rural LeMars, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home.
Mrs. Popken was born March 18, 1914, on the family farm in Grant Township, the daughter of Diedrich and Gretge (Ludwig) Westoff. She was baptized April 5, 1914, and confirmed April 1, 1928. She attended a country school in Grant Township.
She married George Popken on Jan. 24, 1935. The couple farmed in the Craig, Iowa, area until their retirement in 1977, when they moved to LeMars. He died August 1992.
Mrs. Popken was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and the LeMars Senior Citizens Center. She enjoyed quilting and playing cards.
Survivors include a daughter and her special friend, Roxanne Popken and Dennis Deiterman of LeMars; two grandchildren, Jacob Kuecker and Laura Hofland; three great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Dick and Amanda Westoff of LeMars.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, Dennis, and a sister, Doretta Kruse.
