ELK POINT, S.D. -- Elmer E. Heeren, 84, of Elk Point died Thursday, Oct. 26, 2000, at his residence.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron, Iowa, with the Rev. Allen Bidne officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Akron. Visitation will be 10:30 a.m. to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 3 to 5 p.m. at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.
Mr. Heeren was born Aug. 7, 1916, in Union County, S.D., the son of Edward and Freda (Jans) Heeren. He was baptized at Pleasant Hill United Brethren Church (Pleasant Hill Chapel) Union County, S.D., on Sept. 23, 1916, and confirmed on June 14, 1931, at Union Creek Church. He married Velma Appley on Jan. 22, 1938, in Elk Point, S.D. He farmed for more than 50 years in the Union County area and lived on the same farm for 61 years.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Akron.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and their husbands, Selma and Gayland Small, Marjorie and Alan Lucken, and Joyce and Ronald Dreeszen, all of Akron; three sons and their wives, Eldon and Marcene, and Arden and Patty, all of Akron, and Jim and Franie of Beresford, S.D.; two sisters, Bernice Heasley of Ridgefield, Wash., and Edith Granstrom of Akron; 18 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wesley; a sister in infancy; and a great-grandson, David Lucken.
Pallbearers will be his grandsons, Brian and Brad Small, Kent Lucken, Doug, Ted, James and Jesse Heeren, and Jerad Dreeszen.~Sioux City Journal 29 October 2000
