KINGSLEY, Iowa -- Emmett W. Henry, 79, of Kingsley died Monday, Sept. 1, 2003, at his residence following an extended illness with cancer.

Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church in Kingsley, with the Rev. Paul Evans officiating. Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Thursday in Kingsley Cemetery, with military rites conducted by American Legion Nash Post 140 of Kingsley. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Rohde-Earnest Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Emmett was born Jan. 28, 1924, in rural Kingsley, the son of Emery and Mabel (Clary) Henry. He graduated from Kingsley High School in 1941. On Feb. 11, 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served until Feb. 12, 1948.

On Aug. 30, 1947, he married Stefanie Kuhasewski in Germany. After his honorable discharge, the couple moved to the Kingsley area, where he worked at Clark's Hardware in Kingsley before purchasing the Dew Drop Inn, which he owned and operated for 13 years. After owning and operating that, he worked at Bomgaars in Sioux City and Kingsley Furniture Store. His wife, Stefanie, died June 5, 1995.

He married Marlene (Yates) Hagan on Jan. 6, 1996.

He was active in American Legion Nash Post 140, Veterans of Foreign Wars and Disabled American Veterans, helping these organizations in any manner that he was asked to. He was very fond of his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife, Marlene of Kingsley; three daughters and their husbands, Mabel and Terry Durr of Le Mars, Iowa, Maria and Dale Bales of Indianola, Iowa, and Valerie and John Ites of Laurie, Mo.; four sons, Steven Henry of Sioux City, William Henry and his wife, Tracy of South Sioux City, Doug Hagan and his wife, Tammy of Alton, Iowa, and David Hagan of Kingsley; 20 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and a brother and his wife, Estelle and Lavonne Henry of Akron, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Stefanie; a brother, Dale; two sisters, Maxine and Darlene; and a great-granddaughter, Amanda.
