John Manning, 83, of Arlington, Va., passed into eternal rest Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at a local hospital in Arlington.

Jack was born Aug. 24, 1924, in Kingsley, the son of Ray and Hazel (Sheehan) Manning. He graduated from Le Mars Public High School in 1942. He Joined U.S. Maritime Service in 1943 and served five years on merchant tankers. He was a World War II veteran of the Merchant Marines and served in the U.S. Army for two years. In 1957 he received a B.S. degree in engineering from George Washington University with majors in chemistry, electronics and physics and a law degree in 1961, also from GWU.

He met Helen Sloulin through the Newman Club at George Washington University and they married on Aug. 21, 1954. He started working as a patent attorney with NASA in about 1964 and stayed there over 30 years, retiring in 1994.

He was active in the Knights of Columbus and in his parish, St. Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington, Va., where he served on the finance committee. He was a member emeritus of GWU board of trustees, past president of GWU alumni association and a member of the engineer alumni association. Jack volunteered to Boy Scouts of America beginning in 1966 on local, district, council and national levels. He was awarded the silver beaver, the district award of merit and the St. George award.

Survivors include wife Helen E. Manning of Arlington, Va.; six children, Paul of Gainesville, Va., Therese of Alexandria, Va., Stephen of McLean, Va., Patrick of Arlington, Va., Mary Eileen of Ottawa, Ontario, Canada and Elizabeth of Front Royal, Va.; 11 grandchildren, one great-grandchild; a brother Gerald "Jerry" Manning and his wife Janet of Le Mars; and five nephews and three nieces.

Jack was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Eileen Cope and Evelyn Manning.

Visitation will be held at Murphy's Funeral Home in Arlington, Va., today (Thursday) from 4 to 6 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at Saint Agnes Catholic Church in Arlington at 10 a.m. Friday.
