James Robert "Bob" Sweeney, 84, of Sioux City died Thursday, Jan. 18, 2007, at Indian Hills Care Center following a brief illness.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, with the Rev. Roger Augustine, associate pastor, officiating. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Monday in St. Joseph Cemetery at Ellendale, Iowa, with military rites conducted by the U.S. Army Reserve. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. today, with a parish vigil service at 7 p.m., at Christy-Smith Larkin Northside Chapel.

Bob was born Oct. 15, 1922, in the Liberty Township area of Plymouth County, Iowa, the son of Thomas H. and Mary (McCullough) Sweeney. He grew up on the farm and attended grade school in Liberty Township. Later he moved to the Akron, Iowa, area with his parents and graduated from Akron High School. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1946, achieving the rank of sergeant. He served in Europe during World War II. After his discharge from the Army in 1946, he moved to Sioux City.

He married Mary Coletta Manning on Oct. 17, 1950, at St. Joseph Catholic Church near Emmett, S.D. Bob began working for J.C. Penney Co. in downtown Sioux City. He then went to work for the Wagner, Garrison & Abbott Commission firm at the Sioux City Stockyards as a cattle buyer for nearly 40 years.

He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church and was a longtime usher of the church. Bob loved ballroom dancing. He was an avid sports fan and a supporter of Heelan, Notre Dame and the University of Iowa. But most of all, he loved spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Coletta Sweeney of Sioux City; a daughter, Mary Kathleen Sweeney of Tehechapi, Calif.; two sons and their wives, Michael and Julie Sweeney of Sioux City, and their children, Robert, Kristen, Timothy and Bryce Sweeney and Thomas and Pamela Sweeney of Sioux City, and their children, Kayla, Meaghan, Allie and Brenna Sweeney; and a brother-in-law, C.L. Fredrickson of Humboldt, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Ann Sweeney; his parents; and a sister, Doris Fredrickson.

Pallbearers will be Robert Sweeney, Tim Sweeney, Jerry Steen, Jeff Calhoun, Tom Manning and Mike Bennett.
