AKRON, Iowa -- Donald R. Harvey, 87, of Akron died Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, at his residence following a brief illness.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Union Creek Lutheran Church in rural Akron, with the Rev. Steve Larson officiating. Burial will be in Union Creek Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Schroeder Funeral Home in Akron.

Donald was born Oct. 25, 1914, to Orlando W. and Lillie (Bedard) Harvey, near Hawarden, Iowa, in rural Union County, S.D. He attended schools in South Dakota and Hawarden.

He married Eleanor Stene on June 3, 1937, at Peace Lutheran Church in rural Alcester, S.D. They were farm laborers in the Hinton and Sergeant Bluff, Iowa areas. In 1945, the couple began farming on their own in the Akron area in Union County, S.D. They retired to Akron in 1979, after having farmed for over 50 years. The couple had continued to reside in Akron until the present.

He was confirmed at Peace Lutheran Church in Alcester and later became a member of Union Creek Lutheran Church in rural Akron, where he served on the church council. He was a former school board member for the Hoyt District. The couple wintered in Arizona for 21 years.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of Akron; three daughters and their husbands, Sharon and Fred McPherson of Fort Dodge, Iowa, Linda and Stan Rolfes of Akron, and Nancy and Leroy Sveeggen of Alcester; three sons, Duane Harvey and his wife, Alvina, of Baltic, S.D., Jim Harvey and his wife, Penny, of Akron and Douglas Harvey and his fiancee, Allison Lussier, of Fort Hood, Texas; 27 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Orlando and Tina Harvey of Le Mars, Iowa; two sisters, Maxine Boetger of El Paso, Texas, and Margie Clarey of Akron; two sisters-in-law, Alice Harvey of Akron and Myrtle Harvey of Hawarden; and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Ellen, Lois and Frances; and four brothers, Glen, Billy, Kenneth and John.

Pallbearers will be Terry McPherson, Greg Harvey, Brad Harvey, Jason Rolfes, Raymond Sveeggen and Michael Sveeggen. Honorary pallbearers will be Scott McPherson, Keith Harvey, Chad Harvey, Dan Rolfes, Samuel Sveeggen, Stuart Sveeggen, Sidney Sveeggen, Jerome Sveeggen and Brian Davis.

Memorials may be directed to Hospice of Siouxland.
