AKRON, Iowa -- Ed L. Greenleaf, 68, of Akron passed away unexpectedly Tuesday, March 15, 2005, at his residence.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, with the Rev. Richard Zenk officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Akron, with military rites conducted by American Legion Albert E. Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m., with a Knights of Columbus rosary at 7:30 p.m. and a Scriptural wake service at 8 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.

Edgar L. Greenleaf was born Sept. 26, 1936, in Homer, Neb., the son of Clifford E. and Nettie (Vandarwarka) Greenleaf. He attended school in Dakota City. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in December of 1954 and served his country during the Vietnam conflict. He was honorably discharged in May of 1968.

He was united in marriage to Irene Clarey in December of 1981 in Elk Point, S.D. She passed away in June of 2004. For the past 30 years, he had been a resident of Akron, where he volunteered at the Akron Golf Course for over 20 years, served as league secretary and hosted the annual Senior Golf Tournament. He most recently had been working in the cafeteria at the Akron Senior Center, where he was known for his "homemade" cookies. He was also a volunteer and coordinator of the Iowa Special Olympics for many years.

He was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Akron, where he served as a children and adult education instructor. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Akron Senior Center and Akron County Club as well as Albert E. Hoschler American Legion Post 186 in Akron and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles in Hawarden, Iowa. Ed enjoyed his times of golfing and fishing. He also enjoyed bowling, playing cards and playing darts and loved to do woodworking.

Survivors include two daughters, Terresa Greenleaf and her special friend, Nate Bumann, of South Sioux City and Katherine Greenleaf of Lodi, Calif.; three stepchildren, Donna Tripp and her husband, Richard, of Akron, Richard Eufers and his wife, Charlotte, of Wildomar, Calif., and Barb Mitchell and her husband, Bruce, of Akron; a brother, Clarence Greenleaf and his wife, Helen, of Paahrump, Nev.; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In addition to his wife, Irene, he was preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Lois; three brothers, James, Ralph and Marvin; and a son, Eddie Greenleaf in 1996.

Pallbearers will be Katlin Mitchell, Kelly Mitchell, Kasey Mitchell, Ricky Eufers, Kay Decker and Clifford Greenleaf. Honorary pallbearers will be Ben Newton, Anthony Tripp, Joseph Tripp, Suetta Eufers, Ashley Eufers, Nicole Eufers, Candice Tripp, LaCreasha Tripp, Sara Stock and Cal Greenleaf.
