DUANE D. HAWKINS

CLEGHORN, Iowa—Duane D. Hawkins, 77, of Cleghorn, Iowa, formerly of Remsen, Iowa, died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2001, at his residence.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday a Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars, with the Rev. Roger Henry of Grace United Methodist Church in Marcus, Iowa, officiating. Burial will be in Seney Cemetery, Seney, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6-8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Mr. Hawkins was born Feb. 25, 1923, near Westfield, Iowa, the son of Harry and Elva (King) Hawkins. He moved to rural LeMars with his family and graduated from LeMars High School in 1941. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps with the First Division, Aviation Squadron at Guadal Canal during World War II.

He married Leola Hart on April 20, 1946, in Santa Ana, Calif. The couple lived in California for a couple of years and then moved to a farm near Remsen. In 1976, they moved to a farm near Wakonda, S.D., and after retiring in 1998 moved to Cleghorn.

He was a member of Seney Methodist Church, where he taught Sunday School and served as a Sunday School superintendent. He also was a member of Wakonda Methodist Church and a charter member of LeMars Chapter of the Future Farmers of America. He enjoyed collecting guns and reading.

Survivors include his wife; a son, John, of Woodburn, Ore.; two daughters and their husbands, Pamela and Allen Sanow of Marcus, and Jill and Wayne Roder, of Kingsley, Iowa; four grandchildren, Heidi Schwarz, Nanette Sanow and Katie and Andy Roder; two great grandsons; and three brothers and their wives, Royal and Dorothy of Bloomington, Minn., Norris and Patricia of LeMars, and Lorvan and Phyllis of Ireton, Iowa. He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Timothy.
