DEATH CLAIMS EDITOR LE MARS SENTINEL

Funeral services for James C. Gillespie, editor and publisher of the LeMars Sentinel since August 1, 1907, were held Sunday afternoon at the First Methodist Church at LeMars, conducted by the Rev. H. V. Bartz, assisted by Rev. Golden Thompson. The body was taken to Alden, Iowa, Monday for interment in the cemetery there.

Mr. Gillespie died Friday morning in his home where he had been confined by illness for the past month. Although he had been failing for several months, he was able to get down to the Sentinel office for a few hours each day until a month ago, and he continued to write for the paper as long as he had the strength. His death closed a career of journalism notable for its length and the breadth and extent of his public interest and service.

In addition to editing and managing the Sentinel for 42 years, he served from 1917 until the last month of 1949, as Plymouth county Republican chairman, and was a charter member of the LeMars Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, and numerous other civic organizations.
