Peter Arie Vander Meer, Sr., 92, of Le Mars, died Wednesday Sept. 24, 2003, at Brentwood Good Samaritan Center in Le Mars.
Peter Arie Vander Meer was born July 14, 1911, in Hawarden, the son of Arie and Eva (Van Duyn) Vander Meer. He moved with his parents as a child and grew up in Rock Valley. On Aug. 1, 1934, Peter married Margaret Tuynman in Rock Valley. In 1934, he founded Vander Meer Bakery.
Mr. Vander Meer was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus, Trinity Council #1466, B.P.O.E. (Elks), and the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie #1381. He was also active in the Red Cross, Chamber of Commerce, Boy Scouts of America, the Iowa Bakers Association, and Rotary Club.
Survivors include his wife, Margaret, of Le Mars; four sons, Peter of Le Mars, Bill of Ankeny, Tom of Great Bend, Kan., and Jim of Cincinnati, Ohio; four daughters, Mary Conry of Waukee, Evelyn Albrecht of Burnsville, Minn., Ann Savage of Sarasota, Fla., and Dorothy Kelley of Des Moines; 29 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Atea Savage.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Andrew Hoffmann presiding. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Friday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. A Scriptural wake service will be held at 7 p.m. and a Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home.
