Alene Petersen, 87, of Lincoln, Ill., and a former Le Mars area resident, died Saturday, May 10, 2008, at The Christian Village with her family by her side.

Alene was born Aug. 26, 1920, in Paducah, Texas, the daughter of Walter T. and Mary Essie (Lee) Teel. She married Lloyd Petersen on July 15, 1945 in Paducah, Texas. He preceded her in death on Nov. 19, 1984.

She was a member of Lincoln Christian Church and frequently attended Sunday services at The Christian Village.

She was employed by Spurgeons Department Store in Le Mars for more than 20 years.

Alene enjoyed needlework and was very fond of birds. Her Parakeet JoJo will miss her very much.

She was a loving and gentle woman who enjoyed the company of her family, especially the little children. She taught Sunday School for several years and always took great pride in leading little children to the Lord.

Survivors include her daughter, Beverley J. Kurka and her husband Robert C. of Lincoln, Ill.; granddaughters: Holly M. Zehr and husband Randal of Bloomington, Ill., Lara M. O'Donoghue and husband Josh of Lincoln, Ill., and Amber J. Hazel and husband Michael of Lincoln, Ill.; seven great-grandchildren: Christopher Hazel, Larissa O'Donoghue, Zackary Hazel, Emma O'Donoghue, Asher Hazel, Wyatt O'Donoghue, and Jaron Zehr; a brother W.C. Teel and wife Kathy; a sister Betty Gibbs and husband Bud; a brother Bill Teel and wife Mary; a sister-in-Law Luella Thatcher and husband Bud; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her sister Lovonia.

Funeral services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Holland Barry & Bennett Funeral Home with Terry Davis officiating. Burial followed in New Union Cemetery in Lincoln, Ill. Visitation was from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made in Alene's name to The Christian Village or to the Children of Pokot Education Fund.
