Cleo Lechtenberg, 101, of Granville, died Thursday, May 15, 2008, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

Cleo Lechtenberg was born Sept. 16, 1906, at rural Remsen, the daughter of Frank and Elizabeth (Wenner) Tritz. Cleo was raised in the Remsen area and received her education at St. Mary Catholic School in Remsen. On Sept. 24, 1929, she married Leo Lechtenberg at St. Mary Catholic Church in Remsen. They farmed in the Granville area until 1978, when they moved into Granville. Leo died Nov. 25, 1982. Cleo had been a resident of Happy Sietsta since Nov. 29, 2006.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church and church Guild at Granville, Christian Mothers, Ladies Catholic Order of Foresters, Ladies V.F.W. Auxiliary and Senior Citizens.

Cleo was a loving, giving and caring person -- taking care of many family members. She loved cooking and gardening and flowers and also enjoyed playing cards.

Survivors include five daughters and one son, Norma Schuster of Le Mars, Georgia and her husband Don Becker of Hospers, Lorna and her husband Verdean Blumeyer of Sheldon, James and his wife Cari Lechtenberg of Le Mars, Mary and her husband Orville Pottebaum of Alton, Janet and her husband Jeff Zwagerman of Spirit Lake; one daughter-in-law, Bernice and her husband Gordon Schneider of Granville; 33 grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; one sister-in-law, Doris Tritz of Remsen.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Merlin and Daniel; two sons-in-law, Orville Schuster and Gerald Hatting; one grandson, Todd Pottebaum; one great-grandson, Tanner Becker; one sister, Sister Mary Cleo O.S.F.; and six brothers, Harry, Ray, Gordon, Joe, Francis, Cyril in infancy.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville with the Rev. Richard Ball, Msgr. Kenneth Seifried, and the Revs. John Vakulskas, Robert Gralapp and James Tigges concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery in Granville. Friends may call after 4p.m. on Sunday. There will be a rosary at 5 p.m. by St. Joseph Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casketbearers will be her grandsons, Steve Schuster, Ken Becker, Tim Hatting, Joe Lechtenberg, Eric Pottebaum, Jay Zwagerman.
