Ed Recker, 98, of Alton, died Sunday, April 1, 2007, at Plymouth Manor Care Center, in Le Mars.

Ed Recker was born July 25, 1908, at rural Faulkton, S.D., the son of Fred and Elizabeth (Pranger) Recker. When Ed was a small child, he moved with his family to Orient, S.D., where he received his education. During the Depression he moved to Iowa and worked for numerous farmers in the Alton area. On July 4, 1938, he married Gertrude Hansen at Alton. They farmed near Remsen, for several years, then moved to a farm near Alton. Gertrude died April 1, 1975. He retired in the spring of 1995. He had been a resident of Plymouth Manor since Jan. 26, 2006.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton and St. Mary's Rosary Society.

Survivors include five daughters, Mary Lou Bauler of Le Mars, Colane Recker of Sioux City, Jeanette and her husband George Curry of Tulsa, Okla., Elaine Harriman of Laurens, and Gayle and her husband Chuck Schmidt of Round Lake, Minn.: two sons and their wives, Richard and Jean of Le Mars, and Edward Jr. and Renae of Alton; numerous grand, great-grand and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Agnes "Tops" O'Drane of Lake Oswego, Ore.; two sisters-in-law, Helen Recker of Paullina, and Florentine Pickens of Iowa City.

He was preceded in death by two daughters, Bonnie Recker in infancy, and Karen Recker; a granddaughter, Dawn Recker; a great-grandson, Andy Shumate; a son-in-law, Jim Harriman; four sisters and three brothers.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic School Gym in Alton with the Rev. John Vakulskas officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Alton. Friends may call anytime after 3 p.m. Tuesday. There will be a rosary at 4:30 p.m. by St. Mary's Rosary Society and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at St. Mary's Catholic School Gym in Alton.

The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.

Casket Bearers will be Blaine Marienau, Bridget Bailey, Jeff Ruden, Laurie Kobach, Michael and David Recker, Dan Stoll and Randy Hansen.

Honorary bearers will be his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
