HULL, Iowa -- Edward James "Jim" Durband, 80, of Hull died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City, Iowa.
Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at First Reformed Church in Hull, with the Rev. Verlyn Boone officiating. Burial will be 5:30 p.m. Friday in St. Mary Cemetery, Remsen, Iowa. Visitation will be 10 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Jim was born Dec. 12, 1927, in rural Struble, Iowa, the son of Edward A. and Mary C. (Curtis) Durband. He was raised in the Struble and Le Mars, Iowa until his family moved to Hull when he was a teenager. He graduated from Hull High School in 1945 and remained in Hull for much of his life. On Feb. 12, 1946, he entered the U.S. Navy and served during World War II, being honorably discharged on Nov. 18, 1947.
On July 3, 1952, he married Joan Vande Kop in Luverne, Minn. They made their home in Hull. He worked as a mechanic in Hull, a farmer near Larchwood, Iowa, then settled in the banking business. He worked for a time in Sioux Falls, S.D., then for 41 years in Hull at Iowa State Bank. There, he worked as a teller, tax preparer and longtime loan officer. He served as the treasurer of the city of Hull for 33 years. He retired from the bank in 1995. He had been a resident of Heritage House since Feb. 22, 2005.
He was a member of First Reformed Church in Hull.
Survivors include two daughters, Stephanie and her husband, Phil Doeschot of Lake St. Louis, Mo., and Nancy Van Huis of Chandler, Ariz.; three sons and their wives, Dennis and Steffanie of Chandler, Ariz., Randy and Tina of Irvine, Calif., and Donovan and Erin of Tucson, Ariz.; five grandsons, Andrew, Stephen and Timothy Doeschot, Michael and Derek Van Huis; two stepgranddaughters and their husbands, Heather and Jacob MacIntire and Tiffany and Ryan Faris; two brothers and their wives, Joe and Janice of Cleghorn, Iowa, and Tom and Fern of Dixon, Ill.; and a sister, Mary Gengler of Remsen, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Francis Earl Durband; and a brother-in-law, Donald Gengler.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The Bridge, a ministry empowering the poor in third world countries, Christ's Church, RCA, 6930 Mexico Road, St. Peters, MO. 63376.
