HINTON, Iowa -- Bernice I. Muecke, 83, of Sioux City, formerly of Hinton, passed away Sunday, March 14, 2004, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Hinton, with the Rev. David Kottlowski officiating. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Bernice Irene Muecke was born Aug. 20, 1920, on a farm near Hinton, to Edward and Ethel (Kounkel) Johnson. She attended several area schools prior to graduating from Sioux City Central High School in 1938. She worked as a bookkeeper in Sioux City prior to her marriage.

On Nov. 23, 1940, she and Bernard August "Ben" Muecke were united in marriage at Trinity Lutheran Church. The couple made their home on a farm east of Hinton. Ben passed away July 17, 1991. She lived on the farm until she moved into Hinton in 1999. She had lived at Northern Hills in Sioux City for the past three and a half years.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and had been active in Ladies Aid.

She is lovingly remembered by her children and their spouses, Connie and John Rumbaugh of Omaha, Diane and Larry Zinke of LeSueur, Minn., and Donald and Marylyn Muecke of Hinton; a daughter-in-law, Sandra Muecke of Hinton; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Larry and Sherry Betsworth of Spirit Lake, Iowa; a sister-in-law, Irmgard Luksan of Le Mars; and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Muecke of Hinton.

In addition to her husband, Ben, she was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Elmer Betsworth; a son, Douglas Muecke on Aug. 20, 1992; a great-granddaughter, Ashley Rumbaugh; and a brother, Edward "Bud" Johnson.
