AKRON, Iowa -- Margaret "Peggy" McLane, 91, of Ruthven, Iowa, formerly of Akron, passed away Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at Ruthven Community Care Center.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, with the Rev. Glenn Lundahl and the Rev. Luther Thoresen of Zion-Lost Island Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery. Visitation will be after 3 p.m. today, with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and a prayer service at 7 p.m., at Carlsen Funeral Home Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Margaret "Peggy" H.J. Jacobson was born Aug. 14, 1913, in Richland, S.D.. to Elmer and Emma (Olson) Jacobson. When she was 18-months old, her mother passed away. She was adopted by an aunt and uncle, Annie and Olaus Vindahl. She was raised in the Hudson, S.D. area and graduated from Hudson High School in 1931. She was confirmed at Eden Lutheran Church in Hudson on Sept. 18, 1927. She attended the University of South Dakota, where she was a member of the Alpha Phi Sorority.
She married Neil "Mick" McLane in 1932, in Meckling, S.D. The couple lived in Minneapolis prior to moving to Avon, S.D., where they operated McLane Meat Market. In the late 1930s, they sold the business in Avon and moved to Akron and purchased a grocery delivery service and later operated McLane Grocery Store. She taught school in Alcester, Richland and Westfield until the mid-1950s. In 1977, she graduated from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion with a degree in elementary education.
The couple retired and lived in Akron and had an apartment in Sioux Falls, S.D. to be closer to medical facilities when Mick's health began to fail. Mick passed away Oct. 25, 1990. She moved to Ruthven in 1997, and entered the care center in 1998.
She was a longtime member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Akron, where she enjoyed participating in the women's group and Bible study. She also was a longtime member of the Friendship Service Club, past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and helped establish the Camp Fire Girls and served as a leader for several years. She also was a volunteer with the Community Theater and Meals on Wheels.
Survivors include six children, Neal McLane and his wife, Rosemarie of Denver, Colo., Oralee and her husband, Roger Kasa of Huron, S.D., Patricia and her husband, Richard Olson of Minneapolis, Mary Plender of Oklahoma, Okla., Norma and her husband, Carl Haan of Sioux Falls and Linda Burris of Ruthven; a daughter-in-law, Phyllis McLane of Dallas, Texas; 17 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; a half sister, Delores Philips of California; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Michael McLane in 2002; a grandson, Daniel Olson; a brother, Earl Jacobson; a half brother, Darrell Jacobson; and two half sisters, Darlene Jacobson and Alice McKenzie.
