Carla Ann Scales, 62, of Hot Springs, Ark., died Monday, Oct. 15, 2007, at a local hospital in Hot Springs, Ark.

She was born Jan. 13, 1945, in Sioux City, the daughter of Ervin and Betty (Nelson) Criswell. Carla graduated from Le Mars Central High School in 1963. Following high school, Carla attended U.S.D. in Vermillion, S.D., before transferring to National Business Training School in Sioux City.

Carla was united in marriage to Donald Scales in 1965. Carla and Don lived in Ottumwa while Don attended school and Carla worked for Ottumwa Brick and Tile. When Don served his country during the Vietnam Conflict, Carla moved back to Le Mars to be with her family and worked in the business office of Northwestern College in Orange City. Following Don's discharge from the service, they moved to Colorado while Don continued his schooling. Carla and Don had lived in several cities across the country. While living in Orlando, Fla., Carla operated a trophy business and when they moved to Hot Springs, Ark., in the late 1980s they owned and operated a mini-storage facility.

Carla was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband, Donald Scales of Hot Springs, Ark.; father and stepmother, Ervin and Vesta Criswell of Le Mars; brother and sister-in-law, Dennis and Carol Criswell of Tucson, Ariz.; sister and brother-in-law, Katy and Dan Steffens of Lansinburg, Michigan.

Carla was preceded in death by her mother, Betty (Nelson) Criswell, and a daughter, Laura Lee Scales and an infant son.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the Rev. Drew Tomberlin officiating. Visitations with the family present will be from 12:30 p.m. until service time Saturday morning at the funeral home. The body will be cremated.

Memorials in may be made to the charity of donor's choice.
