AKRON, Iowa -- Clayton "Murph" Small, 82, of Sioux City, formerly of Akron, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2007, at his residence surrounded by his loving family.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church in Akron, with the Rev. Dan Doran of First Evangelical Free Church in Sioux City officiating. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the American Legion Hoschler Post 186 of Akron. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with the family present after 6 p.m. and a Masonic service at 7 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Carlsen Funeral Home - Schroeder Chapel in Akron.
Clayton Stinton Small was born Sept. 11, 1925, near Akron, the son of Avery and Grace (Stinton) Small. He attended school in Akron, where he was active in football. He enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving his country during World War II and was honorably discharged. After returning to Akron, he was a truck driver for Don Caskey and Ray Jespersen.
He was united in marriage to Marilyn Davis on July 10, 1950, in Luverne, Minn. He served as chief of police in Akron for a couple of years. He worked for Schroeder Funeral Home for many years. He managed Iowa State Liquor stores in Akron, Sibley, Iowa, and then Sioux City. After retiring, he worked part-time for Knoepfler Chevrolet in Sioux City.
He was a member of First Baptist Church in Akron and had been attending First Evangelical Free Church in Sioux City. He was a member of the American Legion Hoschler Post 186. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite Bodies, where he was a 32nd Degree Knights commander of the Court of Honor of Sioux City. He was active in the Abu Bekr Shrine as a provost marshal, in the Rat Patrol and Foot Patrol. He was a volunteer driver for the Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed watching stock care races and traveling. But most of all, he loved spending time with his family and his yearly family vacations to Minnesota. He loved watching his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren in all of their activities. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Survivors include his wife of more than 57 years, Marilyn of Sioux City; his children, Annette (Mike) Malisch of Sioux City, Tom (Barb) Small of Sioux City, Karen (Ray) Eblen of Salix, Iowa, and Joe (Angie) Small of Sioux City; 10 grandchildren, Missy (Gene) Kolar, Chris Hoesing, Tony (Holly) Hoesing, Jeff Hoesing, Jana, Jennifer and Jared Small, Christy (Todd) Beller, Trevor and Erin Small; eight great-grandchildren, Abby, Blake, Skyler, Kaitlyn, Kerrigan, Kamden, Korbin and Julian; six brothers, Kenneth (Evelyn) Small of Akron, Roscoe (Evelyn) Small of Le Mars, Iowa, Fay Small of Weatherford, Texas, Clinton (Kay) small of Dunlap, Ill., Jim (Edie) Small and Gayland (Selma) Small, all of Akron; a sister, Ramona Govig of Sioux City; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, William, Ivyl, Eldon and Vernard; and three sisters, Vernice Blum, Wilma Baldwin and Karen Small.
Memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Siouxland.
