Donald J. Gabel, 81, of Hawarden, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007, at the Avera MeKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD.
Donald J. Gabel was born March 4, 1926, near Akron, the son of Ernest and Minnie (Langlett) Gabel. He attended grade school in Preston Township and high school in Akron.
Don worked for the Agriculture Stabilization Conservation Service (ASCS) for several years and drove many years as a local and over-the-road truck driver. In later years he worked for Sioux Fertilizer and the city of Hawarden.
On August 25, 1996 Don married Marcella Anderson.
He was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church of rural Akron.
He enjoyed playing cards, reading, and being with his family, relatives, and friends. Don was very devoted to his church and knew that he had a special place in heaven with God.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Marcella Gabel of Hawarden; son, Steve (Michelle) Gabel of Elk Point, S.D.; daughters, Teresa (Robert) Book of Akron, Susan (Gary) Smith of Chamberlain, S.D., and Gerri (Jerald) Day of Canton, S.D.; stepdaughter, Joelle (Jan) Antonson of Beresford, S.D.; stepsons, Brian Anderson of Sioux Falls, S.D., Kendall (Laure) Anderson of Rapid City, S.D., and Gaylen (Laura) Anderson of Sioux Falls; brother, Eldon (Viola) Gabel of Akron; sister, LaVonne Rolfs of Yankton, S.D.; sister-in-law, Irene Gabel of Akron; also 19 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
Don was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Virgil; two half-brothers, Raymond and Roy; and two half-sisters, Violet and Faye.
Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with the Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will be in the St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church Cemetery, rural Akron. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
In lieu of flowers memorials can be directed to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
