Dorothy Brown, 87, of Brunsville, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2008, at the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Dorothy Inez Herbst was born June 12, 1920, in Le Mars. She was the youngest child of Gus and Katie (Arbuck) Herbst of Merrill. Dorothy grew up on her parents Centennial Farm, six miles southwest of Merrill. She was baptized in the Morningside Lutheran Church in June 1929. She was confirmed at St. John Lutheran Church in Merrill by the Rev. Brinkman in 1949. Dorothy graduated from Hinton High School in 1938. She attended Wayne State Teacher's College in Wayne, Neb., where she majored in elementary education. She was called home from college due to an illness in the family and never returned to college. Dorothy went to work at Security National Bank in Sioux City for five years. Dorothy was united in marriage to Wayne Brown, who at the time was enlisted in the United States Marine Corps on Sept. 29, 1944, in Houston, Texas.
After the war Dorothy and Wayne Brown settled on a farm north of Hinton. Two years later they purchased a farm southwest of Merrill, where they farmed and started their family. Dorothy moved with her family when Wayne went to work with Farm Bureau and affiliated companies, which took her to Allerton and Indianola. Due to an illness in the family, Dorothy and her family moved to Brunsville in November 1961. Her husband Wayne worked for Farmland Industries, which included Hinton, until 1979. Dorothy worked at JCPenney's in Le Mars for three years and Ben Franklin in Le Mars for three years.
Her first loves were raising her family of four, gardening, sewing, baking, music, being active in St. Peter's Lutheran Church, Brunsville where she sang in the choir for 15 years and participated in community events.
Dorothy will be fondly remembered for her amazing pies, baked goods and community activities.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Wayne Brown; and her four children: Janet Rausch of Abilene, Texas, James Brown and his wife Cheryl of Colorado Springs, Colo., Carol Johnson of Melbourne, Australia and Lieutenant Colonel Mark Brown and his wife Christina of Honolulu, Hawaii. Her grandchildren include: Michelle (Rausch) Holcomb of San Antonio, Texas and David Rausch of Keller, Texas, Jeffery Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo., Matthew Johnson of Council Bluffs, Katherine Johnson, Denver, Colo., Christina (Johnson) Foster of Denver, Colo.,, Myla and Mara Brown of Honolulu, Hawaii. Dorothy also had three great-grandchildren, Avery and Taylor Brown of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Shaelly Grace Holcomb of San Antonio, Texas.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents Katie and Gus Herbst, her brothers Arlo, Ben, Odie, Ardie Herbst of Merrill, and a granddaughter, Sheally Beth Rausch of Abilene, Texas.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, Brunsville, with the Rev. Dan Gerrietts officiating. Interment will be in Hillside Cemetery at Merrill. Visitations will be after 3 p.m. Friday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 6 p.m. followed by a 7:30 p.m. prayer service at the funeral home. Visitations will continue from 1 p.m. until service time at the church.
Pallbearers will be Matthew Johnson, Jeffery Brown, David Rausch, Mike Lee, Richard Holcomb, Chris Foster, and Katie Johnson.
