Gwen Kass, 75, of Le Mars, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
The former Gwendolyn Bixby was born Jan. 21, 1933, near Grand Meadows in Cherokee County, the daughter of Lucif and Joy (Blue) Bixby. She grew up near Grand Meadows and attended schools in both rural Cherokee County and Washta Public School.
Gwen married Leo Joseph Kass on June 4, 1952, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. She worked for many years along with her husband as his bookkeeper for Leo's Garage. Leo died quite suddenly from complications of an apparent heart attack on Nov. 30, 2002.
Gwen was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the church guild, and the Christian Mothers Society.
Survivors include a son, Steve Kass and his wife, Connie, of rural Remsen; three grandchildren, Andrew, Brittany and Brandon, all of rural Remsen; four sisters-in-law: Isabelle Bixby of Whitewood, S.D., Georgia Kass of Le Mars, Melda Roethler of Marcus and Shirley Kass of Oyens; three brothers-in-law, Ray Kass and his wife Florence of Marcus, Joe Kass and his wife, Pat of Cherokee and Chuck Kass and his wife, Donna of Sioux City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Leo; and two brothers, Darrell and Lowell Bixby.
A memorial mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars with the Rev. Kevin Richter officiating. Burial will be in calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
The Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars is in charge of arrangements.
