Marilyn Joyce (Muilenburg) McCarty, the daughter of Adrian and Helen (Reighard) Muilenburg, was born Aug. 24, 1935 in Menlo, Iowa. She lived her youth in Melvin, where she attended school, and graduated from Melvin Community High School in 1953. She was proud to have been a member of the state basketball team of 1951.

She was united in marriage to Clifford R. McCarty Aug. 20, 1955, in Sibley. The couple made their home in various Iowa communities including Plessis, Lester, and finally Melvin, where they raised their family. She and her husband owned and operated McCarty Truck Lines from 1966 through 1993. She was also employed at Prairie View Nursing Home from 1979 until 1990. Most recently, she moved to the Prairie View campus moving from the Manor to Assisted Living.

Marilyn was an avid sports fan -- especially the Iowa Hawkeyes and Tiger Woods. She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and the American Legion Auxiliary in Melvin.

She enjoyed going to her grandchildren's events, playing cards with her neighbors, gardening, and visiting the casinos. She was an excellent cook who was famous for her mashed potatoes and gravy, chocolate chip cookies and chocolate cake!

Most importantly, Marilyn was known to always put her family's needs before her own.

Left to cherish her memory is her husband, Clifford; her children and their spouses: Sue Ann Riecks and her husband Randy of George, Gene McCarty and his wife Colleen of Denton, Texas, Kay Wynja and her husband Michael of Melvin, and Dean McCarty and his wife Kathy of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren: Andrea Wiesenmeyer and her husband Eric, Philip Riecks and his wife Kristin, Jennifer Riecks and friend Peter Karle, Jason McCarty, Matthew McCarty, Bret Wynja and friend Megan LaRoche, Patrick Wynja, Anthony Wynja, Shane McCarty and Drew McCarty; one great-grandchild Emily Wynja; two brothers, Lyle Muilenburg and his wife Barbara and Gary Muilenburg; other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, David.

Memorial service was at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Sanborn, with the Rev. Tim Hogan officiating. Private family burial followed at Baker Township Cemetery in Melvin.

Pallbearers were her grandchildren.

The Sanborn Funeral Home of Sanborn was in charge of arrangements.
