GRANVILLE, Iowa -- Gerald W. Klein, 90, of Granville died Monday, Jan. 14, 2008, at a Sioux City hospital.
Services will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Granville, with the Rev. Richard D. Ball officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a St. Joseph Guild rosary at 5 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen, Iowa.
Gerald was born Dec. 9, 1917, in rural Alton, Iowa, the son of Anthony "Anton" and Mary (Steichen) Klein. He was raised in the Alton area and received his education in both the rural school system and St. Mary Academy in Alton. He then was a farm laborer in the Alton area.
On Feb. 5, 1940, he married Angeline Ahlers in Granville. They made their home near Granville, where they were engaged in farming and later retired on the farm. He was a dealer for more than 40 years of Funks G. Seed Corn. Angeline died April 7, 2006. He had been a resident of Prairie View Nursing Home in Sanborn, Iowa, since December 2007.
He was a member of Sr. Joseph Catholic Church. He was the family historian and champion storyteller. He enjoyed country western music and in his earlier years, enjoyed bowling. Most of all, he enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was much loved and will be truly missed.
Survivors include three sons, Tom, Loren and Leon, all of Granville; two daughters, Marcy Klein of Prairie Village, Kan., and Noreen and her husband, Curtis Gard of Colfax, Iowa; a daughter-in-law, Mavis Klein of Richland, S.D.; seven grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Agnes Vonderharr of Granville; and a brother and his wife, George and Mary Jane Klein of Belgium, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Ronald; a daughter-in-law, Marsha Klein; three sisters, Anna Marie Budden, Marian Klein and Esther Ahlers; and a brother, Anton Klein.
Pallbearers will be Brad Anderson, David Fisch, Curt Gard, Alan Heyl, Tony Klein and Thomas Ritchie,
