Dr. J. Thurlow Karr
Dr. J. Thurlow Karr, of LeMars and formerly of Ireton, died Saturday, June 4, 1994, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in LeMars.
Dr. Karr was born Oct. 23, 1916, in Ireton, the son of Randall and Mary “Mamie” (Johnston) Karr. He served with the United Stated Army during World War II.
He began his teaching career in a rural school in Eagle Township near Ireton. He taught in Iowa schools before moving to New York where he received his doctorate in education from Columbia University. Mr. Karr later moved to Indiana where he taught. He was an administrator in Gary, Ind., and South Chicago, Ill., schools. He retired and returned to Iowa in 1991.
Dr. Karr was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Valparaiso, Ind.
Survivors are three brothers, Hollis and Kenyon of Ireton, and Weston of LeMars; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Lyman and Leland.
Services will be 2 p.m. today (Monday) at Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Ireton, with Rev. James Ransom officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service.
