Dr. J. Larry Elliott, 83, of Le Mars, died Thursday, Feb, 21, 2008, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Joseph Larry Elliott was born Feb. 24, 1924, in Pendleton, Ind., the son of Burton and Katherine (Holiday) Elliott. After the death of his mother, his father married Grace Alley. Larry enlisted and proudly served with the United States Marine Corps during World War II. He earned his honorable discharge on Jan. 19, 1946.
Larry and Ruth Murphy were united in marriage on Aug. 12, 1946, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Sheldon. The couple resided in Indiana where Larry attended Butler University and earned his degree in pharmacology. They later returned to the area and purchased the Rexall Drug Store in Alton in 1959.
In 1976 Larry returned to college at the Palmer Chiropractic College where he earned his doctorate. Later Larry and Ruth would establish the Alton Chiropractic Clinic in Alton.
Larry was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars and sang with the choir. His interests included bowling and golfing with his wife, spending time with his family, painting, and working with stained glass. Larry was a member of the Floyd American Legion Post #200 in Alton.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 61 years, Ruth of Le Mars; sons L. Doyte and Susan Elliott of Greeley, Colo., and Paul and Ginny Elliott of Roscoe, Ill.; daughters Ellen and Jake Klein of Alton, Teresa and Duane Penning of Granville; grandchildren Amy and Ben Edge and Chris Elliott of Greeley, Colo., Brian and Rachel Klein of Sheldon, Brenda and Darrin Recker and Doug and Krista Klein of Granville, Melissa and Pete Feller of Remsen, Heidi and Nic Kramer of Hospers, Katie and Josh Aberson of Oklahoma City, Okla., Ashley and Mark VanVoorst of Sioux Center, Eric and Nikki Elliott of Pecatonica, Ill., Crystal Elliott of Chicago, Ill.; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister Saralee Bennett of Anderson, Ind.; sisters and brothers-in-law Maxine Gintert of Le Mars, Roy and Loretta Murphy of Sheldon, Dorothy Wright of Iowa Falls, and Genevieve Murphy of Le Mars; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Mass of Christian Burial was at 11 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Kevin Richter celebrated Mass. Burial will take place at later date at St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery in Sheldon. Visitation began at 12 noon Sunday at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m. and a Scriptural prayer service at 7 p.m. There was also one hour of visitation at the church prior to Mass on Monday.
