John L. Winterringer, 84, of Le Mars, died Friday, Feb. 2, 2007, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.

John LaDean Winterringer was born May 27, 1922 in Sioux City, the son of John and Elsie (Timmerman) Winterringer. He attended country school near Salix and later Salix Consolidated and graduated in 1940. He entered the United States Army in 1943, and served his country during World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1945.

He was united in marriage to Betty Mook on June 19, 1948 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Salix. The couple farmed near Salix for a short time. John went to work for Frank Pilley and Sons dairy in Sioux City. In 1961, they moved to Le Mars and John went to work for Wells' Dairy in Le Mars, working in the milk plant. He retired in 1985.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars. He was also a member of the American Legion Wasmer Post 241in Le Mars and the WWII Last Man's Club.

John and his wife enjoyed genealogy and were members of many clubs in the area and statewide, including the Sioux County genealogy club, Woodbury County genealogy club, Northwest Iowa Genealogy Society where they worked as researchers for the club, Iowa State Genealogy Society, and the Computer Genies club.
He also enjoyed gardening, especially iris, peonies and gladiolus. He was a member of the Floyd Valley Garden club in Le Mars and the Iris society in Sioux City. He was also active at the Plymouth County Historical Museum, volunteering his services. He was also a member of the Friends of the Library. John also enjoyed collecting stamps and coins.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Survivors include his wife Betty of Le Mars; two sons, Dennis Winterringer and his wife Celia of Littleton, Colo., and Mark Winterringer and his wife Jane of Yankton, S.D.; two grandchildren, Jesse Winterringer of Arvada, Colo., and Nathaniel Winterringer of Forth Worth, Texas; and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister: Muriel Meyer.

Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 1 p.m. Sunday with the family present after 4 p.m., and a vigil service at 5 p.m., all at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. Visitation resumed one hour prior to the services on Monday at the church.
