STEVE P. BORTSCHELLER
REMSEN, Iowa --- Steve P. Bortscheller, 86, of Remsen died Sunday, March 5, 2000, at McKennan Hospital in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Remsen, with the Rev. Thomas J. Hart of Remsen, Randy Schon of Oyens, Iowa, and Richard Ries of LeMars officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. said by Catholic Order of Foresters, all at Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Mr. Bortscheller was born Jan. 11, 1914, in rural Oyens, the son of John and Josephine (Heissel) Bortscheller. He was raised in the Oyens area and attended St. Catherine’s Catholic School in Oyens.
He then farmed with his father.
He married Catherine Vaske on June 14, 1938, in Remsen. The couple farmed near Oyens for 42 years. They retired and moved into Remsen in 1980. She died June 14, 1986.
He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Catholic Order of Foresters. He was a former member of St. Catherine’s Catholic Church and church choir. He was a former member of Marion Township Election Board and was a Marion Township trustee. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, baking and cooking.
Survivors include six daughters, Connie and her husband Richard Grienke of Cherokee, Iowa; Mary Kay and her husband, Fred Roling, and Rose and her husband, Daniel Kunkel, all of Remsen; Patricia Bortscheller of Sioux City; Jean and her husband J. Murphy Copeland, of Sycamore, Ill.; and Karen and her husband, Bruce Wigg, of La Porte City, Iowa; three sons and their wives, James and Kathy of Pinellas Park, Fla.; Larry and Jan of Spirit Lake, Iowa; and Fred and Colleen of LeMars, Iowa; 23 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a sister, Grace Piarowski of Chicago; and a brother, Francis, of Remsen.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Al and two in infancy.
Pallbearers will be Mark, Michael, and Jason Bortscheller and Andy, Dan and Mike Roling.
