SERVICES HELD FOR BEN A. NIEHUS
Funeral services for Ben A. Niehus, 75, longtime and highly esteemed Remsen resident who died at his home here January 8, [1960] were held in St. Mary’s Catholic church Monday morning.
Offering the requiem High Mass was St. Mary’s pastor, the Rt. Rev. Msgr. Francis P. Schultes.
Mr. Niehus had been in failing health for several years.
Born at Petersburg, Iowa, July 15, 1884, he came to Remsen as a young man with his parents, attended the rural and St. Mary’s school and chose farming as his vocation.
He married Katherine Deiterman, member of another prominent Remsen family, on June 3, 1913, in St. Mary’s church and the couple went to farming, operating successfully until their retirement to Remsen in 1951.
A lifelong member of the Catholic faith, Mr. Niehus was a faithful member of St. Mary’s parish and one who lived the Christian life in his home and among his many friends. He was highly esteemed by his every acquaintance, a devoted family man and loyal friend and one of the community’s outstanding citizens. His death besides coming as a shock to the bereaved widow and family brought keen regrets to those who knew him. He was a member of Msgr. Schemel council, Knights of Columbus of Remsen.
