William H. Timmins
LEMARS, Iowa — William H. “Bill” Timmins, 78, of LeMars, died Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2001, at his residence.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Plymouth Presbyterian Church, rural LeMars, with the Rev. Randall Knuth Officiating. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in the Plymouth Presbyterian Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. Thursday, with a prayer service at 7 p.m., at the church.
Mr. Timmins was born May 23, 1923, in Des Moines, the son of William and Erma (Carmes) Timmins. Bill was raised in Urbandale, Iowa, and graduated from Urbandale High School in 1941. Bill served his country in the United States Navy from 1942 to 1946. Following his discharge he attended the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Delta Sigma Pi Fraternity. Bill graduated with a degree in business in 1950.
On Aug. 11, 1951, Bill was united in marriage to Shirley Rowe at Plymouth Presbyterian Church. He worked at Pioneer Phosphate Co. in Des Moines, and then he and Shirley moved to a farm near LeMars. Bill and Shirley farmed west of LeMars until retirement in 1988 and moved to LeMars in 2000.
Bill had served as Johnson township clerk, served on the board of Plymouth Farmers Mutual Insurance Co. for 19 years, and served on the board for Food For Life for 10 years.
He was a longtime member of the Plymouth Presbyterian Church where he served as Sunday school superintendent and had been a Sunday school teacher for 40 years. Bill served his church as a member of the choir, trustee, elder, and served as a board member on the Presbytery level. Bill was an avid reader and lively conversationalist. He loved to travel and especially loved to sing. He sang for many events and was a past member of the Plymouth County Barbershoppers.
Survivors include his wife, Shirley, of LeMars; a daughter, Rebecca Timmins of Apple Valley, Minn.; a brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Janet Timmins of Ocala, Fla.; a sister, Marilyn Argenta of Grand Junction, Colo.; a brother-in-law and his wife, Dean and Jean Rowe of LeMars; nieces and nephews and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law, David Argenta.
Pall bearers will be Steven Rowe, Todd Hendrickson, Clark Tindall, Kent Brown, Gregory Olsen and Ryan Laroco. Honorary pallbearers will be the Plymouth Presbyterian Brotherhood; Arlen Lucken, Vernon Robinson, Dean Rowe, Ralph Taylor, Gene Toben, Ron Wendt, Don Mortenson, Lyndon Ray, Rev. Randall Knuth, and Elroy DeBoer.
