COMMUNITY SHOCKED
BY TRAGIC DEATHS

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock in Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln township, with the Rev. H.D. Stahmer officiating, for Herman Dierking, 57, and his son, Wesley Robert Dierking, 22, who were killed last week Thursday afternoon when a speeding passenger train struck their car on the Tyler street crossing in Leeds. Burial was in Arlington Cemetery at Moville, Iowa.

It is said Mr. Dierking’s body was carried in the wreckage of the dare on the front of the engine about 400 feet. The supposition is that he died instantly. His son, Wesley, was thrown 200 feet by the impact and his body fell along the right-of-way. He died seconds later.

Herman Dierking was born October 26, 1894, in Dakota county, Neb., and was a veteran of World War I. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Lincoln township. He is survived by his widow; his daughter, Nada Dierking, of Hinton; six brothers, W.H., Louis, Carl and Fred, all of Sioux City, Otto of Los Angeles, Cal., and Ernest of South Sioux City; four sisters, Mrs. Ida Ross, Mrs. Anna Sund and Mrs. Lena Mitchell all of Sioux City, and Mrs. Marie Holmes of Los Angeles.

Wesley Robert Dierking was born September 30, 1929, in Sioux City and was married May 2, 1951 at Leeds. He is survived by his widow, the former Marilyn Jensen, his mother and his sister, Nada.
