Funeral Monday for Mrs. Homan
Solemn Requiem Mass Sung
For Beloved Remsen
Woman, Crash Victim

Funeral services for Mrs. Peter J. Homan, 62, who was killed instantly last Thursday in a car accident near Hinton, were conducted at St. Mary’s Catholic church Monday at 9:30 a.m.

The solemn requiem mass was presided over by the Rt. Rev. Msgr. M.A. Schemel, celebrate; Rt. Rev. Msgr. Joseph Fisch of Le Mars, deacon; the Rev. Father John Thoenissen of Hospers, sub-deacon, and the Rev. Father G. R. Wingert, master of ceremonies.

Burial was in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery.

Mrs. Homan, a life-long resident of the Remsen community, met her untimely death in a two-car collision about noon last Thursday while she and her daughter, WAF Capt. Elaine Homan were traveling to Sioux City.

Both were rushed to Sacred Heart hospital, but Mrs. Homan was pronounced dead upon arrival, Capt. Homan was given emergency treatment for a bad cut on her knee, and other cuts, scratches and bruises about her body. She was released Friday.

Mrs. Homan, a beloved woman in the Remsen community, was born May 18, 1887 on the old Henry Wenner homestead in Meadow township. One of 11 children she was the daughter of Henry and Anna Faber Wenner.

She was reared in the Remsen community and later attended St. Mary’s grade and high school, being in the second graduating class in 1905.

After her graduation she attended the girls’ normal teaching school in Le Mars, and for four years before her marriage she taught in the rural schools in Plymouth county.

On Feb. 1, 1910 she married Peter J. Homan, manager of the M.A. Moore Lumber company at Craig, Iowa, at St. Mary’s Catholic church. The couple resided at Craig until about 1917 when they returned to Remsen and Mr. Homan engaged in the managing of the Home Lumber company with his brother, Nick.

In 1923 they left Remsen for Fond du Lac, Wisc., wh ere Mr. Homan bought an interest in the W.J. Nuss lumber company.

After a year there the family returned to Remsen and took over the farm of Mr. Homan’s father, Peter, Sr., which is now occupied by Gerald Homan.

Returning to the lumber business, Mr. Homan bought an interest in the Ahmann Lumber Co., in 1944 and in company with his son, Gordon, who joined him in 1945, has operated it to date.

The death of Mrs. Homan came as a shock to the entire Remsen community and was particularly jarring to the many immediate relatives. For the suddenness of her passing whisked one of Remsen’s best known women and mothers from a very active and alert life. Busied as she was with her household duties, she reared a fine family of seven children and still had time for church, civic and club activities.

She was a member of the Catholic Daughters of America, the Christian Mothers sodality, St. Mary’s Alumni association, St. Mary’s choir and two card clubs.

Besides her husband she is survived by seven children: Gordon, Paul, Peter and Gerald of Remsen, Capt. Elaine Homan of the WAF at Francis E. Warren Air Force base, Wyo., Robert of Inglewood, Calif., and Mrs. J. E. (Marion) Frampton of Long Beach, Calif.

A son, Donald who died in infancy; two sisters, Mrs. Mike Lamberto and Mrs. Frank Tritz and her parents preceded her in death.

Surviving grandchildren are John, Mary, Ann, Douglas and Donald, the children of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Frampton; Jeanette and Rose Marie, children of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Homan and Mary Louise and Robert, Jr., children of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Homan.

Pallbearers were Louise Schoofs, Clarence Groff and Robert Lorge, three nephews on the Homan side; and Joe Alesh, Jr., Maurice Keffler and Harry Tritz, three nephews on the Wenner side.

The Homan car, a 1948 Plymouth sedan, was traveling south, and as the Hayden car pulled back onto the paving it apparently shot across the road into the path of the Homan vehicle.

The accident occurred during a rain about 11 a.m. Both Mrs. Homan and her daughter were given first aid and rushed to the Sacred Heart hospital in Wiltgen’s ambulance, but Mrs. Homan’s death occurred before the ambulance reached the hospital.
