Martha A. Pageler, 84, of rural Merrill, died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2007, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Martha Ann Pageler was born Dec. 14, 1922, in Sterling, Colo., the daughter of the Rev. Franz O. and Ida (Wojahn) Bunge. The family moved to Grimes, Iowa when Martha was a child. Pastor Bunge then accepted a call at Christ Lutheran Church (Grant Township) rural Le Mars. Martha attended country school in Grant Township and continued her education at Le Mars High School, graduating in 1940. She also attended Western Union (Westmar) College in Le Mars. Following her education, she worked at the Le Mars Daily Sentinel and Le Mars Mutual Insurance.
On Aug. 30, 1946, Martha and LaVern Pageler were united in marriage at Christ Lutheran Church. Her father presided over the ceremony. The couple made their home on a farm southeast of Le Mars. Martha assisted LaVern with farming and was a homemaker. In 1981 the couple moved to the family farm near Merrill. On Dec. 14, 2006, Martha moved to the Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars.
Martha was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. She taught first grade Sunday School for many years. She also taught Vacation Bible School and played the organ for numerous weddings and funerals.
Martha and LaVern had recently celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Martha will be lovingly remembered by her husband LaVern of rural Merrill; a son, Evan Pageler and his wife Janice of Georgetown, Texas and a son Loren Pageler of Le Mars; grandchildren Timothy Pageler and his wife Bevyn of Round Rock, Texas and Stephen Pageler and his wife Lisa of Newton; a sister, Esther Meyer of Mesa, Ariz.; and a brother, Roland Bunge and his wife Claire of Nacogdoches, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Martin; a brother and sister-in-law, Victor and Erma Bunge; and a brother-in-law, William Meyer.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John's Lutheran Church in Le Mars. The Rev. Gary Landsness will officiate. Burial will follow at Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural Le Mars. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Mauer - Johnson Funeral Home of Le Mars. The family will be present from 5 to 8 p.m. and there will be a prayer service at 7 p.m. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
