TWO LE MARS SISTERS DEAD IN CRASH
HUSBANDS IN SIOUX CITY HOSPITALTwo sisters, LeMars natives and the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Sanow, LeMars, were dead at the scene of a 3-car crash, after midnight Friday at the north edge of Sioux City on highway 75.
Their husbands and the driver of the second car involved were critically injured and taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital, Sioux City.
All were listed in serious condition Monday morning and in the hospital intensive care unit.
Dead at the scene were Suzanne Kay Nicks, 24, who has lived the last two years in Sioux City, and Mrs. Bonnie Marie Vander Weide, 20.
The Vander Weides were moving back to LeMars from Colorado and had arrived in Sioux City Friday. He had been station with the army at Colorado Springs.
The accident took place early Saturday morning at 41st and highway 75 north.
Both women died of multiple head and body injuries, according to Dr. Thomas L. Coriden, Woodbury County medical examiner.
They were passengers in the late model car driven by Mrs. Nicks’ husband, James, 26. Mr. Vande Weide, 22, also was a passenger.
Driver of the second car was James Madden, 21, Sioux City.
Police said the Nicks car was northbound on highway 75 north and was attempting a left turn onto 41st St., when its engine stalled.
Still moving, the Nicks vehicle was struck broadside by the Madden car, which was traveling south on the highway, according to officers.
Impact pushed the Nicks vehicle into a taxicab stopped at the stop sign at the intersection, a police report said.
The cab was driven by Wyman E. Anderson, 31, 1515 ½ Nebraska St. Anderson was treated for injuries at St. Vincent Hospital and dismissed.
Police said one of the women was thrown from the wreckage.
The deaths were the second and third traffic fatalities for the year in Sioux City. The count a year ago on the corresponding date was five.
An investigation into the mishap was continuing by the police department traffic bureau.
Funeral services for the two women will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Church of Christ in LeMars.
Rev. Kendall Talbott, lay pastor, and Rev. Dean Orris, pastor of the Church of Christ, Akron, will officiate.
Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens, rural LeMars, under the direction of the Mauer funeral home.
Mrs. Nicks, the former Suzanne Kay Sanow, was born July 21, 1950, in LeMars, a daughter of Leslie and Eilene Beach Sanow. She was married June 28, 1968, in LeMars.
Mrs. Vander Weide, the former Bonnie Marie Sanow, was born Oct. 27, 1954, in LeMars. She was married July 8, 1972, in LeMars.
Her husband was just discharged from military service in Colorado, where they had lived at 1516 South Cascade.
Mrs. Nicks is survived by her husband and a daughter, Rebecca, at home.
Mrs. Vander Weide is survived by her husband and a son, Clayton James.
Both are survived by their parents, Mr. and Mrs. Leslie Sanow of LeMars; two brothers, James of Sioux City and William of LeMars; five sisters, Mrs. Barbara Nicks and Mrs. Roberta Lundquist, both of Sioux City; Mrs. Joan Bruscher of LeMars, and Connie and Tracy, both at home in LeMars.
