MERRILL, Iowa -- Herbert A. Raby, 93, of Merrill passed away Friday, Jan. 24, 2003, at Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in Le Mars, with the Rev. Dr. Klaus Raab of St. Paul Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Adaville, Iowa. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at the funeral home. Visitation will resume one hour prior to the service Wednesday at the church.

Herbert Alfred Raby was born July 12, 1909, on a farm near Lawton, Iowa, to Alfred and Alice (Angove) Raby. He received his education at various country schools in Woodbury County. Following his education, he assisted his family with farming.

On May 2, 1928, he and Mathilda Pauline Utesch were united in marriage at his parents' home in Johnson Township, Plymouth County, Iowa. The couple farmed in the Adaville, Iowa, area for many years. They moved to Merrill in 1970, but continued to farm. He loved farming and raising livestock. He moved to Plymouth Manor in Le Mars on July 29, 1999.

He will be lovingly remembered by his daughter, Bonnie Hammerstrom of Plant City, Fla.; eight grandchildren, Diane, John, Mark, Jeff, Craig, Bob, Debra and Steve; eight great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; a brother and his wife, Delbert and Clara Raby of Merrill; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Mathilda on Dec. 1, 1989; two sons, Dawayne and Kenneth; a son-in-law, Robert Hammerstrom; a sister, Elsie Kamm; a brother, Chester; and an infant brother, Wilbur.
