GERALD RAY MOELLER

EARLY --- Gerald “Jerry” Moeller, 59, of Early, died Wednesday, May 22, 1996, at Loring Hospital in Sac City following a lengthy illness.

He was born May 6, 1937, at Rock Rapids, the son of Ray and Nettie Moeller. His childhood was spent helping his father on farms in Iowa and South Dakota, attending school and excelling in sports. Upon finishing his schooling he entered the U.S. Army, serving in Germany.

Following his service to his country, Mr. Moeller worked in road construction in South Dakota and later worked for many years in the transportation field, driving truck and as a traffic manager for Sioux Steel in Sioux Falls, S.D., and Harker’s Transportation in LeMars. In 1981 he moved to Garden City, Kan., and was employed by IBP, Inc. and Val-Agri/Swift in the transportation area. In 1986 he was promoted and relocated to Dumas, Texas. Leaving the southwest area in 1987, he was employed as Operations Manager for Scott Melvin Transportation at Rock Port, Mo., until ill health forced him to leave in late 1989, returning to Iowa in 1990 and living in Early.

Mr. Moeller was very active in sports all of his life, participating in softball, and was an excellent bowler for many years in Sioux Falls and LeMars. He also worked with youth basketball in the Sioux Falls YMCA. He loved to fish, loved the outdoors and nature’s creations.

He was married to Janet Ovall in December of 1958. He married Fran Tuller in 1967. In 1982 he married Janice Stofferan at Garden City, Kan.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Moeller of Early; four sons, Jim Moeller, of Custer, SD., Daryl Moeller, of Rapid City, S.D., Brian Moeller and his wife, Pam, of LeMars, and Jeff Moeller of West Union; a daughter, Diane Renshaw and her husband, Roger, of Libby, Mont.; four stepsons, Dennis Poppenga of Chicago, Ill., Charles Stofferan and his wife, Julie, of Joplin, Mo., Randy Heiken and his wife, Linda, of Adel, and Mike Stofferan of Early; five step-daughters, Sandi Braden of California, Carole Croate of Texas, Kristine Mesner of Storm Lake, Kathleen Athens and her husband, Eric, of LeMars, and Kerrie Riepma and her husband, Mike, of LeMars; eight grandchildren; 15 step grandchildren; his mother, Nettie Ochenga and stepfather, George, of Rock Rapids; two sisters, Iona Van Dyke of Rock Rapids and Avis Pauling of Spirit Lake; several nieces and nephews; and many friends and acquaintances.

Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars, with the Rev. Larry C. Fett officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memory Gardens of LeMars, with military honors conducted at the graveside by Wasmer Post No. 241 of the American Legion.

Visitation will be from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. today (Friday), with a prayer service at 7 p.m. at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in LeMars. Visitation will continue on Saturday from 8 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

~FAMILY NOTE: "Jerry" Moeller actually had five sons. His youngest son, Tim Moeller & his wife Patricia & their two children, were living in Custer, S.D. at the time of Gerald Moeller's death.
