LARRY ATHENS

LE MARS, Iowa --- Larry Athens, 58, of LeMars, died Friday, June 21, 1996, at Floyd Valley Hospital in LeMars.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Presbyterian United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dave Cave officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Mauer-Johnson Funeral Home in LeMars.

Mr. Athens was born July 15, 1937, in Doon, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Bernice (Helmers) Athens. He graduated from LeMars Central High School in 1956 and attended Washburn University in Topeka, Kan., and Westmar University. Mr. Athens served in the United States Air Force Reserve from 1959 to 1964. He was a longtime LeMars businessman and owned and operated Athens Standard Service and Athens Conoco Car Wash. He had also been chief Maintenance man at Eastbridge Apartments and was employed at Westmar University at the time of his death.

Mr. Athens was a member of the Presbyterian United Church of Christ. He enjoyed collecting miniature cars.

Survivors include two brothers and their wives, Roger and Betty, and Marion “Sonny” and Ramonda, all of LeMars; his stepmother, Verna Athens of LeMars; seven nieces and nephews; 13 great-nieces and nephews; and an aunt and uncle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and grandparents.

Pallbearers will be Ted Collins, Larry Dobson, Bill Engel, Jim Ziniel, Russell Kroepel and Clifford Monroe.
